Entrepreneurship in High Technology Networks: a Framework for Entrepreneurial Learning

Science parks provide an environmental setting for private venture development in the close proximity of universities and can be seen as an environment enabling private and public research units to collaborate. Science parks are assumed to be first and foremost knowledge catalysts aiming at high technology and knowledge intensive venture development through shared knowledge creation between universities and business. This paper proposes a framework for entrepreneurial learning within high technology networks, especially in biotechnology sector. We seek to show the applicability of the framework transcending different ontological dimensions and even knowledge contexts within a science park setting. We discuss the role of science parks as a ́play ground` for SME development and especially for networked entrepreneurial learning. The root of creating conditions for effective entrepreneurship and start-ups within science parks lies on the entrepreneurial climate and way of action within science park actors supporting SMEs. This playing field can be described as a process of developing mutual understanding and cultural empathy between stakeholders. We illustrate our argumentation with the biotechnology sector as networked collaboration between firms and universities has long traditions in this sector. The biotechnology field is extremely knowledge intensive and science based, but entrepreneurial skills and mind-set are lacking. Entrepreneurship has become the basis for biotechnology business and success will be dependent on individuals’ and firms’ ability to learn and convert new knowledge into economic utility.
